Nesting Test
Both male and female mice will build a nest when they are provided with suitable building material. The nestbuilding requires a complex set of behaviours that are typically impacted by neurological diseases and/or pharmacological interventions that are affecting hippocampal function. To assess nest building behaviour, mice are provided with additional nesting material. The next morning, nest quality is scored on a scale from 1-5.
To measure nest building performance, a square piece of pressed cotton is provided for 1 night. Nest building is scored, with a score of 5 for a crater-shaped nest (left) and 1 if the cotton is hardly touched (right).
